Cover Letter

I am writing to exclaim my desire to serve ESPN's FiveThirtyEight team in the role of production intern. Being a sports enthusiast with a heart for data analysis and video-journalism, I was immediately drawn to ESPN’s FiveThirtyEight internship.

In the role of production intern, I can apply my skills in web analytics to understand the current consumer base, then create visually stimulating marketing strategies to further pique the interest of existing and new audiences. I believe making the unique mission of FiveThirtyEight more visible to the traditional sports fan community will not only drive clicks, but also inspire people to think differently about the broader world. Collaborating with your design team to influence web content, consumer interactions and visual design would allow me to evoke emotion by telling compelling stories. I believe my background and experience could bring a new perspective for clever and exciting content. By continuously assessing progress through research and evaluation of the content’s impact, I would advocate for continuous improvement leading to measurable results.

Currently, I am a junior at Gonzaga University majoring in Sport Management. As a writer and videographer for the Gonzaga News Service, which serves as a branch of the Marketing and Communications Office, I am part of the team that creates an online presence. This is my second year working in this role, and I am grateful to have gained valuable skills and experience, including producing videos that accompany news articles.

I also have worked as the Editorial Intern at Kleo Art Gallery, which allowed me to gain unique skills related to art, marketing collateral, and artistic expression. I took the initiative on several opportunities for growth in this role, which included creating short feature films about women in the arts, social media management, and developing and editing marketing materials. I am working to develop an ambassador program that will increase gallery awareness and also recruit artists for web design, which included writing and submitting a business opportunity solution.

As an intern last winter for ILF Media Productions, I learned about filmmaking through assisting on video shoots. Beyond the basics of film, I learned a great deal about interactions with clients on shoots, filming on a schedule, and quickly solving issues on set.

In a generation motivated by visuals on screens, I think well-produced videos are one of the best ways to encourage sports fans to follow their passions in a variety of areas-- politics, economy, culture, health, environment, etc. One of my passions is to inspire sports fans to push their comfort zones. A non-profit I volunteer for is called SheJumps, which has a mission to increase the participation of women and girls in outdoor activities through educational events. These events include a Wild Skills clinic, Get the Girls Out event, and an Intro to Avalanche Awareness training at local venues and ski resorts.

My favorite part of web content development is telling inspiring stories through a mic, a camera and computer software. I would contribute to your creative team by bringing an innovative marketing approach using video to promote your high-quality products. I look forward to hearing from you.  Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
Michelle Lawrence
